Blood coagulation tests
Blood coagulation disorders can manifest by uncontrolled bleeding after injury or unexplained spontaneous haemorrhage in the body. Increased blood coagulation values are also the life threatening condition associated with thrombi formation affecting the walls of blood vessels and disturbing blood supply to other organs.
Blood coagulation tests are prescribed by eh physician as needed. These tests are necessary before the surgeries, aiming to assess the risk of bleeding and thrombi formation.
Blood coagulation tests can be recommended by your physician if:
- you have inherited blood coagulation disorders;
- you suffer from haemophilia,
- you have been diagnosed with liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis).
- you have gut diseases;
- You are treated with anticoagulants;
- you experience continuous nose or gingival bleeding.
Commonly the following coagulation time tests are carried out to assess the coagulation process:
- prothrombin complex activity (PT, SPA/INR),
- Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) test
APTT reflects the internal system of coagulation factors, including VIII, IX, XI and XII factors. Treatment with heparin or other direct thrombin inhibitor hirudin is always controlled with APTT test. The most informative result is obtained when blood sample is taken at least 3 hours after the last dose of heparin.
Prothrombin complex activation test is carried out aiming to control treatment with vitamin K agonists (orfarin, warfarin). For monitoring purposes prothrombin complex test is carried out not only anticoagulant therapy but also in case of:
- suspected blood coagulation disorder caused by insufficient activity of a single or several prothrombin complex factors II, V, VII, X,
- to diagnose vitamin K deficiency,
- for diagnostics and treatment of liver diseases.
Advanced registration is not required for these tests.
