Transferrin is a protein that transports iron through the blood to the liver, spleen and bone marrow, and participates in the control of iron levels in the blood.
Transferrin increases with iron deficiency, and decreases when iron status improves. A high transferrin index is often established prior to the development of anaemia.

Low transferrin is indicative of:

  • Inflammations;
  • Oncologic conditions;
  • Liver conditions;
  • Protein metabolism disorders;
  • Nephrotic syndrome due to frequent blood transfusions.

Together with the transferrin test we also recommend having other anaemia marker tests: iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation, soluble transferrin receptor, TIBC, UIBC and automated blood test.
You would normally be referred for these tests by a family doctor, a doctor of internal diseases or haematologist, but you can also decide that you need these tests independently.

You do not need to book the test in advance. You can simply call in at the reception.
