Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)

Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme found in many body tissues, mostly in the heart, liver, muscles, and kidneys. Lactate dehydrogenase is released into the bloodstream during cell damage.

LDH test is usually prescribed for patients who are suspected to have an acute or chronic disease which causes cell or tissue damage. The test is performed in order to diagnose kidney, pancreas, liver diseases (hepatitis, liver tumours), and heart muscle diseases (myocardial infarction), or if various kinds of muscle damage or atrophy are suspected.
If LDH concentration is found to be increased, additional tests are performed to get a more accurate diagnosis.
