Fat grafting is a solution for those who want to naturally correct different areas of the body. Fat tissue is most commonly removed from the abdomen and thighs and, after it has been specially processed, it is injected into the breasts, face or buttocks.

Fat grafting can be used to:

  • correct the body shape, for example, boost the volume of breasts or buttocks;
  • make the face look younger;
  • fill wrinkles;
  • correct scars and various defects resulting from injuries or diseases.

It is important to remember that fat transfer to the breasts or buttocks would not work for those who expect a dramatic change in their look. Moreover, one surgery may not be enough to reach the desired effect as not all transferred fat survives.
At our Centre, liposuction is performed using two the most effective modern methods of fat removal, infrasonic infiltration and liposculpture. Hence, a shorter, less painful and more effective surgery. It is a great advantage for those who plan to have both fat grafting and liposuction of some problematic body areas.

What should you know about the surgery?

Prior to the surgery, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic;
  • you take anticoagulants or have coagulation disorders (thrombosis included);
  • you have diabetes and take medication;
  • you have been diagnosed with cancer;
  • you have had corticosteroid injections in the last 6 weeks;
  • you have a heart pacemaker implanted;
  • you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant;
  • you have immunosuppression;
  • you feel unwell on the day of the surgery;
  • you have been ill prior to the procedure (a fever, flu, cold);
  • you smoke (abstaining is recommended for at least 4 weeks prior to surgery).
  • a complete blood count;
  • blood coagulation test (APTT);
  • electrocardiogram (EKG) and its evaluation;
  • blood glucose level test;
  • other tests if you have chronic diseases, as prescribed by your doctor.

The patient can bring their test records from other healthcare institutions, or they may have them done at the Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre in 2 hours. Prices of the tests performed at the Centre. The tests must be performed no earlier than 14 days before the surgery.

The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia, based on individual needs and the level of the surgery. The surgery takes from over ten minutes to a few hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.
The operative areas are disinfected. An infiltration cannula, followed by a fat harvesting cannula, is inserted into the hypodermis through some small incisions. Cannulas extract from a few dozens of millilitres to a few litres of liquid fat.
Extracted fat may be processed in a special way before they are injected into a selected area of the body—fat may be washed, filtered, sedimented, centrifuged, and only then injected.
After the surgery the incision is stitched up and covered with a special plaster.

The patient is cared for by the medical staff at our Centre for 1-3 days after the surgery. All plastic-aesthetic surgeries cause a slight or more noticeable pain, which may be relieved with prescribed painkillers.
Your surgeon will schedule your next appointment after the surgery.
Bruising or haematomas that form in the areas where the fat was taken from and injected into disappear in a few days or weeks, depending on the volume of correction.
It is important to bear in mind that if your skin was bumpy, i.e. affected by the cellulite, prior to the surgery, it will stay this way after the surgery, too.

If the surgery is small, the patient can resume their usual activities on the day after the surgery, although most of the time the patient goes back to work in 1-2 weeks. The patient can resume their physical activities in 2-4 weeks.
In order to reach a satisfying result, the patient is advised to be more careful with his or her body and wear compression garments for 3-4 weeks.
The sutures are removed 7 days after the surgery. Small scars of a few millimetres become virtually unnoticeable with time.
The effect of the surgery is visible immediately, but the final result should be evaluated in 3-6 months, depending on the level of the surgery.

If you come from abroad, you will discuss all the details (when you can take a flight and what post-operative care is needed) together with your doctor after the surgery.

We do not issue sick leave certificates after aesthetic surgeries, therefore, if you are not going back to work immediately after the surgery, you should plan to schedule your post-operative period (at least two weeks) as a holiday.

Cold compresses. Peace and quiet are essential in the post-operative period.

  • the patient is diagnosed with life-threatening diseases;
  • the patient has infections or viral diseases (the surgery can be performed after a full recovery);
  • the patient has increased blood pressure (the risk is evaluated by the doctor).

As any other surgery, fat grafting poses risks, which you should discuss with your surgeon:

  • usually up to 50% of the transferred fat survives;
  • additional surgeries may be needed to achieve the desired result;
  • there is a risk of fat necrosis—transferred fat dies and forms painless hard round bumps;
  • in the areas, where large amounts of fat were taken from, the skin may droop, although this depends on the individual.
