Once the flu virus infection enters the body, it spreads to all organs and can cause severe complications, sometimes even death.

Therefore, getting a flu shot is recommended for all people, especially children and pregnant women.The flu vaccine, which has been used for more than 50 years, is well tolerated and safe, giving no reason to worry about it.

Frequently asked questions

Influenza is an acute respiratory tract infection, dangerous because of the complications it can cause (lung or ear inflammation, blood infection, meningitis, etc.). Although flu symptoms are similar to those of a cold (weakness, temperature, cough, sore throat and headache), flu, unlike a cold, starts and develops very quickly.

There are three types of flu: A, B, and C. All of these viruses are dangerous to humans but types A and B cause epidemics, whereas type C results in sporadic cases. The antibodies that are produced when the patient contracts one type of flu build the patient’s immunity only against that particular type and do not protect the person from other types. Moreover, the flu virus is prone to constant change. The World Health Organization (WHO) observes the genetic mutations of the flu viruses every year and gives recommendations on the optimal antigen content of the vaccine accordingly.

In order to protect themselves from flu, people need to strengthen their immune system and avoid big gatherings during the flu epidemic. That being said, so far the most reliable means of flu prevention has been vaccines. Vaccination is recommended for everybody, but especially for pregnant women, children from 6 months of age and people in risks groups who:

  • are 65 years old and over;

  • have respiratory tract and lung function problems;

  • have heart function problems;

  • are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease;

  • are diagnosed with diabetes;

  • are diagnosed with an acute staphylococcal disease;

  • have lower immunity due to various conditions.

A health check-up prior to the vaccination is obligatory. The doctor will evaluate the overall health of the patient and give recommendations on the vaccines.

Pregnant women are strongly advised to get vaccinated against the flu. These vaccines not only protect pregnant women, who often get more severe forms of the infection than other patients, but also reduce the chance of the newborn contracting the flu and the risk of flu-related pregnancy complications.

Vaccinating children is very advisable, because the risk of contracting an infectious disease at school or kindergarten is fairly high. Furthermore, not only do children get ill but they also infect the parents or, even worse, their younger siblings who cannot be vaccinated yet (children can get flu shots from 6 months of age).

We recommend getting vaccinated every year before the flu season, October-November would be best but vaccination is also possible later.

The Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Centre offers Influvac, a trivalent (subunit) vaccine against the flu, or VaxigripTetra, a quadrivalent (split virion) vaccine. Side effects of these vaccines are rare. Sometimes the patient may experience some pain, swelling, or redness at the site of the injection. Rarely does the temperature rise and it usually comes down in 24 hours.

The difference between the split virion vaccine and the subunit vaccine is that the split virion vaccine contains fragments of the flu virus with surface antigens whereas the subunit vaccine contains pure surface proteins of the flu virus.
