Microbiological (culture) examinations
Microbiological examinations are usually carried out aiming to confirm bacterial or fungal infection. When the causative agent of the infection is found, antibiotic sensitivity tests are also carried out; these tests indicate hat antibiotics are most suitable to treat the infection.
Microbiological examinations can be made using the samples from many different body sites, depending on the location of the suspected infection. Urine, faeces, saliva, sputum, blood, sperm, prostate or urethra secretion, throat and cervical swab, or nasal excretion samples can be used for the examination. If the eye infection is suspected, a conjunctiva swab is taken, in case of ear infection – a swab from auditory canal is taken.
The examinations are prescribed by the physician as needed. A physician or a nurse using a sterile cotton swab takes a small specimen sample and then the swab with the specimen is transferred into a special medium. This procedure is absolutely painless.
Pre-registration is not required for urine, stool, blood, milk and sputum cultures. Simply deliver the specimen in a sterile container (available in the pharmacy)
For other examinations pre-registration is required.
