Magnesium (Mg) is one of the key microelements involved in enzyme production and is necessary for the heart, lungs, bones and nervous system and for the functioning of the entire body. Magnesium is necessary during pregnancy for the prevention of premature birth and it also helps to regulate blood sugar content and blood pressure. Magnesium is necessary for more than 600 biochemical processes occurring in the human body.

Prior registration is not required; upon arrival, please go straight to the reception.

Why it is worth

To be examined at our Centre?

  • The laboratory is accredited with the ISO 15189 standard, so you can be confident that your tests will be performed to the highest quality.
  • You will find out the results of the main tests within 1–2 hours and the rest within 1 day, except in cases where this is impossible due to the technological process (e.g., the time it takes for a culture to grow).
  • The results of the tests carried out will be explained by our laboratory specialists. This service is only offered by a few laboratories in the country.
  • If required, we can perform further tests using the same sample of blood, for up to 7 days after the sampling.
  • No danger of damaging or mixing up the test samples due to transportation.
  • Tests can be carried out anonymously.

Good to know

A magnesium test is recommended for those who have been taking diuretics, cytotoxic and other specific medicines for a long time, after prolonged vomiting, diarrhoea, dieting or alcohol abuse, for people who have diabetes mellitus, renal or digestive system diseases, or when suffering from magnesium assimilation disorders. More magnesium is necessary during pregnancy, for those under large physical strain or constant stress, after operations or when regularly consuming salty foods or alcohol.

  • cramps, muscle spasms
  • numbness of extremities
  • painful menstruations
  • fast fatigue
  • restless sleep
  • attention disorder
  • chills

It has been shown that long-term and substantial magnesium deficiency may cause the development of the following diseases:

  • osteoporosis
  • digestive system diseases
  • nervous system diseases
  • muscle system diseases

Excess magnesium risk appears when administering injectable magnesium preparations. With oral magnesium preparations there is no probability for overdose. Excess magnesium is diagnosed for people who have kidney stones and may cause cardiac function disorders.

  • For an explanation of the test results, you should call the laboratory tel. (+370) 247 64 17.

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

It is recommended to have calcium, potassium and phosphorus tests together with a magnesium test. These microelements might also be lacking with magnesium deficiency.

Vitamin B6 helps to assimilate magnesium, so with magnesium deficiency it is also recommended to have a vitamin B6 test.

The human body does not produce magnesium and all of the required amount must therefore be received with food.
Foods rich in magnesium include green leafy vegetables, nuts, meat (especially beef), chocolate, cocoa, black tea, eggs, groats, bread, bran, pulses, bananas, dried mushrooms and sesame and sunflower seeds.
The daily norm of magnesium for adults is 300–800 mg.
