Serum iodine makes up the majority of the iodine that accumulates in the thyroid. This microelement is necessary for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency may cause disorders of the thyroid function, goitre, hypothyroidism or cretinism and may be associated with depression, obesity and infertility.

Prior registration is not required; upon arrival, please go straight to the reception.

Why it is worth

To be examined at our Centre?

  • The laboratory is accredited with the ISO 15189 standard, so you can be confident that your tests will be performed to the highest quality.
  • You will find out the results of the main tests within 1–2 hours and the rest within 1 day, except in cases where this is impossible due to the technological process (e.g., the time it takes for a culture to grow).
  • The results of the tests carried out will be explained by our laboratory specialists. This service is only offered by a few laboratories in the country.
  • If required, we can perform further tests using the same sample of blood, for up to 7 days after the sampling.
  • No danger of damaging or mixing up the test samples due to transportation.
  • Tests can be carried out anonymously.

Good to know

You should have this test if you are on a diet, vegan or vegetarian, do not use iodinated salt, are constantly feeling tired, if you have noticed swelling in the frontal area of the neck or started losing or gaining weigh without a reason. More iodine is necessary for pregnant and nursing women.

  • slower metabolism
  • weight gain
  • poorer memory
  • fatigue
  • thinning hair
  • irritability, edginess
  • muscle weakness
  • increased heart rhythm
  • unusually warm skin
  • weight loss
  • anxiety

Both excess iodine and its deficiency are dangerous for the health. Iodine deficiency results in the disruption of thyroid hormone synthesis and the development of thyroid function disorders that affect the metabolism processes in the entire body.
Excess iodine can result when taking iodine supplements. This may cause both the activation and slowing down of the function of the thyroid. When the thyroid function increases, a person can suffer from anxiety, increased sensitivity, heat flushes, copious perspiration, insomnia, weight loss and heart palpitations. In case of slowed down thyroid function, metabolism, thinking and movements also slow down, and a person becomes apathetic and sleepy.

  • Your test results will be ready within 1 working day.
You can pick them up at the reception or, if you wish, we will email them.
  • For an explanation of the test results, you should call the laboratory tel. (+370) 247 64 17.
