Sodium (Na) is a microelement and electrolyte that regulates the water metabolism in the body. It is important for muscle contraction, acid and alkali balance and the functioning of the nervous system.

Prior registration is not required; upon arrival, please go straight to the reception.

Information on how to prepare for the test is available HERE.

Why it is worth

To be examined at our Centre?

  • The laboratory is accredited with the ISO 15189 standard, so you can be confident that your tests will be performed to the highest quality.
  • You will find out the results of the main tests within 1–2 hours and the rest within 1 day, except in cases where this is impossible due to the technological process (e.g., the time it takes for a culture to grow).
  • The results of the tests carried out will be explained by our laboratory specialists. This service is only offered by a few laboratories in the country.
  • If required, we can perform further tests using the same sample of blood, for up to 7 days after the sampling.
  • No danger of damaging or mixing up the test samples due to transportation.
  • Tests can be carried out anonymously.

Good to know

A sodium test is carried out when monitoring the condition of your health due to renal and oncological diseases, cardiac insufficiency, acute inflammations, vomiting, diarrhoea or losing too many fluids due to other reasons. More sodium is necessary when engaging intensively in sports or perspiring copiously, such as in hot weather.

Excess sodium is not recommended for people with high blood pressure, seeing as this aggravates the functioning of the heart, blood vessels and liver.

  • heat flushes
  • low blood pressure
  • frequent pulse
  • nausea, vomiting
  • headaches
  • poor appetite
  • muscle spasms
  • use of diuretics
  • use of antidepressants
  • use of certain analgesics
  • renal insufficiency
  • hepatic diseases
  • protracted vomiting or diarrhoea
  • cardiac insufficiency
  • Adison’s disease
  • thyroid function disorder, hypothyroidism
  • ketonuria
  • excessive water consumption
  • copious perspiration
  • increased concentration of antidiuretic hormone (ADH, vasopressin)

With excess sodium, fluids accumulate in the body (oedema), the blood pressure increases, and renal diseases may develop.

Characteristic symptoms:

  • water retention (oedema)
  • swelling of hands and legs
  • thirst
  • high blood pressure
  • rapid heartbeat
  • too little water intake
  • too much salt
  • reduced concentration of antidiuretic hormone (ADH, vasopressin)
  • increased concentration of aldosterone
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • use of corticosteroids
  • use of lithium preparations
  • use of contraceptives
  • use of laxatives
  • use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Your test results will be ready within 1 working day.
You can pick them up at the reception or, if you wish, we will email them.
  • For an explanation of the test results, you should call the laboratory tel. (+370) 247 64 17

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Sodium blood concentration is closely related to potassium and chloride concentration. Consequently, it is recommended to have these tests carried out simultaneously.

The amount of sodium in the body very much depends on the amount of fluids taken and lost, and the amount of sodium received with food.

Edible salt is the main source of sodium in food. Other products rich in sodium include herring, olives, tomato juice, and processed salty foods.

Daily norm of sodium:

  • for adults – 1–5.5 g (1 teaspoon of salt contains 2 g of sodium)
  • children aged under 8 – 4.1 g
  • children aged 9–15 – 4.6–5.5 g
