Deviated Septum Surgery (septoplasty)

Nasal septum surgery – septoplasty is the only treatment for the correction of a deviated nasal septum, restoration of a straight nasal septum and for better airflow through the nose.

The surgery is recommended for the following:

  • nasal obstruction/congestion (difficulty in breathing through the nose),
  • frequently reoccurring sinusitis;
  • nasal bleeding, when a deviated nasal septum interferes with the treatment;
  • headache caused by a deviated septum.

Treatment: Before recommending deviated nasal septum surgery, the ENT doctor will examine your nose and assess whether the surgery is essential. If needed endoscopic examination equipment can be used for the nasal examination.

After the surgery: Patients can usually return home on the next day after the surgery. The doctor’s recommendations should be followed for 2 weeks after surgery to ensure a speedy recovery

You will notice a marked improvement in your symptoms once the bruising has subsided; this generally occurs approximately 2-3 weeks after the surgery.

  • electrocardiogram (ECG) with the assessment;

The patient can bring their test results from other healthcare establishments or have them done at the Medicine Diagnostics and Treatment centre in 2 hours; The tests should have been carried within the previous 14 days and the results should be within the accepted normal limits.

The patient should be absolutely healthy before the surgery – the surgery cannot be done even if the patient has a simple head cold. The blood test results should be within the accepted normal limits.

Septoplasty (surgery for deviated nasal septum) is carried out under general endotracheal anaesthesia. An incision is made in the anterior part of the nasal septum and the most significantly deviated cartilage and osseous fragments of the nasal septum are removed; the new nasal septum is formed at the middle line and the incision is sutured with 2 resorbable sutures. The nasal cavity is packed with specials tampons.

The surgery takes about 1.5 hours including preparation (the surgery itself takes about 1 hour).
Patients generally spend 1 day in hospital (in individual cases it can be longer than 1 day), infusion therapy and painkillers are administered.

Recovery from septoplasty takes 2-3 weeks.

If you are coming from abroad, we recommend that you plan on staying in Lithuania for about 14 days, in order to allow your wounds to be fully healed and to avail of immediate medical assistance, if required.

We recommend that patients take 7–14 days off work.

The tampons are usually removed on Day 2 after the surgery. The nasal passages are irrigated once or twice after the surgery; this helps to remove any blood clots that may have formed. In order to minimise any discomfort during this procedure, it is carried out under anaesthesia (cooling of the nasal passages) in our Centre.

After surgery our physicians recommend:

  • not lifting heavy loads for about 2 weeks;
  • avoiding hot, dusty, smoke-filled premises;
  • not blowing your nose vigorously for 1 week after the surgery;
  • washing your nasal passages with sea water and using oily nasal drops, if they have been prescribed;
  • not drinking hot or carbonated drinks, alcohol or coffee for 2 weeks;
  • not having hot baths, sauna, or sunbathing for 2 weeks after the surgery;
  • taking any medicines prescribed by the physician (medicines are not prescribed in every case).;
  • seeking medical advice if you have a temperature of more than 38 °C.

Frequently asked questions

As with any surgery, there is a risk of complications; however, these are reported in only 5 percent of cases.

The most common complications:

  • insufficient nasal breathing,
  • bleeding,
  • altered nasal shape,
  • changed colour of the nose,
  • haematoma of the nasal septum,
  • defect of the nasal septum (perforation),
  • infection,
  • olfactory disorder.

It is important to follow your doctor’s recommendations for a successful recovery

It is normal to have a subfebrile fever (up to 37.5 °C) for about 14 days after the surgery and to experience mild pain in the nose and/or ears. However, if the fever exceeds 38 °C and lasts for 1-2 days, you should contact your doctor immediately, who will decide on the necessity for any additional treatment.

Timely deviated septum surgery may change your quality of life significantly as quality breathing is restored, calm sleep is ensured and other bothersome symptoms associated with the deviated nasal septum disappear. Do not let the fear of surgery prevent you from dealing with the problem.

After the surgery usually:

  • nasal breathing is improved;
  • headaches associated with the deviation of the nasal septum will disappear;
  • snoring associated with the deviation of the nasal septum will no longer be a problem;
  • you will not suffer from chronic rhinitis, and sinusitis will be a rare if ever occurrence;
  • your sense of smell may be much better.

If the deviated nasal septum surgery is carried out because of nasal obstruction, nasal breathing is restored and significantly improved in the majority of patients.
