It is mostly older women – 60-80 years old that suffer from this problem, but women as young as 30 can also suffer from urinary incontinence.

Research data show that every fifth woman in Lithuania suffers from urinary incontinence and only a quarter of them consult a physician on the matter.

Any unintentional leakage of urine, independent of the amount, signals that the system is not tight, but the reasons for this can be very different, which results in different treatment methods – medication, surgery, or just a lifestyle change, diet, training of pelvic muscles, especially for younger patients. A small leakage is not a life threatening condition, therefore people often try to solve the problem individually. Nowadays, there are a number of suitable hygiene products. However, eventually the condition progresses and, the fear of “accidents”, can result in voluntary isolation – no trips, meetings, theatre, active sport or other. This can lead to an inferiority complex or even depression. If there is unintentional loss of urine when coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or when there is a more frequent need to urinate, even at night, if urination is painful, if there is a burning sensation, or there are traces of blood in the urine – you should see a doctor immediately since, in fact, it may not be urine incontinence, but symptoms of kidneys or bladder disease

Yes, but it is important to exercise properly and continually.

Usually there is more than one cause – congenital and inherited anatomical features. Different diseases, such as dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, endocrine diseases, stroke, spinal pathology, pelvic surgery, as well as the use of some medications may cause urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence can also result after childbirth, if the baby was big, the delivery was complicated and perineal and pelvic floor muscles were overstretched.

Urinary incontinence could be also caused by constant stress, being overweight, smoking, intense sport, weightlifting, hard physical work.

Firstly, the physician needs to define the causes of the disease, check whether the pelvic organs have prolapsed, carry out diagnostic tests and determine the type of urinary incontinence. Sometimes it is difficult to decide the true causes, in which case more tests are needed, and consultations with a urologist or other specialists. The patient should have a full bladder at the consultation with the gynaecologist, i.e. do not use the toilet before the visit. If irritable bladder syndrome is diagnosed, medication to reduce the sensitivity of the bladder receptors is usually prescribed. Patients could also follow a certain diet, lose weight, and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

If the disease has not advanced, the more common treatment prescribed is – modification of life style, kinesiotherapy, muscle stimulation, insertion of special rings into the vagina.
